CELL PHONE FOR KIDS – smart parenting!
Kids demands are no longer being restricted to laptops, to gaming consoles and to iPods, but the cell phone for kids is now becoming a must have item!
No doubting it that cell phones for kids are a great idea in many respects – highest among them being that its a super way for parents to keep tabs on their kids and to keep in touch with them. But on the other hand, there are problem issues to deal with such as cyber bullying and “sexting“, which is obviously going to be of great concern for many parents.
Kids can often misuse cell phones – long calls to friends that may even be living in a different part of the world that they met online, sharing information with people who really should not be trusted, spending too much time playing cell phone games when they should be focusing in on their homework and potential for loss of the cell phone are among the greatest of concerns. And in which case, smart parenting is vital!
Follow along with these tips and you’ll be greatly cutting down the risks at hand!
1. do not allow for your child to take their cell phone to their school. All sorts of negative things can come of this.
2. keep an eye on minutes used on the cell phone plan, and watch out for texts they receive that may imply “sexting” is occurring.
3. one step further on keeping an eye on minutes used is to utilize the parental controls that come along with many cell phones these days. This will include being able to set restricted times of use of the phone.
4. be sure to get a good grasp of the features of the phone that your child will be using so you can monitor it more easily.
5. inform your child about some of the dangers they face should they share their details with people that they do not know.
6. get some cell phone monitoring software which will help you watch over usage time and can help you track text messages being sent and received.
There are a number of ways to monitor a cell phone right now and there is no requirement for any tricky software downloads either. One such parental control is called Safetyweb for which you only need to sign up to, to get some excellent features such as the following:
i. you can set up an alert service which you can access via text message to your own phone or by email to your inbox. This will monitor the activity on the phone and you can watch out for unusual texting and calling frequencies.
ii. you can monitor unusual usage patterns of the cell phone, such as sudden increase or sudden decrease. At the same time, its wise to be aware of your child’s behavior. Are they more quiet than normal, or perhaps more excited about something that they are not discussing with you?
These measures will help you gain peace of mind whilst you are not at your child’s side. Its not a pleasant thought worrying about what’s going on every single day simply because you have no real awareness.
The more awareness you have, without becoming overly intrusive, the better! After all, its a great feeling seeing your own children grow into their teens and really enjoy the flexibility that most other kids have in terms of taking advantage of new technology that was not around when you were growing up.
By all means let your own child grasp hold of this opportunity, but at the same time just be wise to the possibilities that we as parents would most certainly wish to avoid at all costs!
